SNACKS is back!

Dear SNACKers,

The return of SNACKS for the 2015-16 year approaches!

We will begin with a social and planning meeting on Friday, October 2, at 7:30 p.m., with snacks and games after.  Please RSVP to Mrs. Stirling regarding your participation this year.  Just as last year, SNACKS will meet on the third Friday of the month. Know any home-schooler you'd like to invite?  Just let me know.

This year we have a theme, especially designed to help you get English/Literature credit if you need one for your home school.

This year's theme is REGIONAL AMERICAN LITERATURE.  We'll be reading great literature from different areas of the United States that really convey the feeling and culture of each native place.  From the plains of Oklahoma to the tenements of New York, from the lakes of Minnesota to the gold-rush towns of California, this cycle of meetings will help us focus on the American experience.  The idea is simple:  listen to a parent-led small lecture and discussion, discuss the book amongst yourselves, and if you want credit, turn in a paper about the book to your home-schooling parent.  So easy!  The format of SNACKS will be the same, except that you can turn an organized body of work into a high-school course if you'd like to.

On October 2nd we will do a book pick before we start partying.  Each family will "own" a book.  Here are some ideas to get you started:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Betty Smith (New York)
The Last of the Mohicans, James Fenimore Cooper (New York)
Okla-Hannali, R.A. Lafferty (Oklahoma)
The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck (California)
Lake Woebegone Days, Garrison Keilor (Minnesota)
The Yearling, Marjorie Kinnean Rawlings (Florida)
Lonesome Dove, Larry McMurtry (Texas)
Dandelion Wine, Ray Bradbury, (Illinois)
Winesburgh Ohio, Sherwood Anderson (Ohio)
 Delta Wedding, Eudora Welty (Mississippi)
To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee (Alabama)
The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne (Massachusetts)

Do you know any more?  We can't wait to hear about them!  The moms and dads will make the final decisions around the kitchen table.  Our first novel will be True Grit, set in Arkansas, for our October meeting, if you want to get started reading.

I hope to hear from you soon!

Happy reading,

Mrs. S.
